The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Andromeda, and is the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way. It is about 2.5 million light-years away from Earth and has a diameter of approximately 200,000 light-years1. It is one of the few galaxies that can be seen with the unaided eye, appearing as a milky blur or a misty patch on the edge of the constellation. It is accompanied by two smaller elliptical galaxies, M32 and M110.
